Did you know that bottle fed babies are swallowing millions of micro plastics with each feeding? Let’s ditch the plastic and take a look at some nontoxic baby bottles for your little ones.
Why Buy a Nontoxic Baby Bottle?
The all-famous label of “BPA free” has recently taken the marketing world by storm. Everyone knows that BPA is bad for them, but did you know that there are many other chemicals in plastic that are toxic?
Studies show that even after one washing in low heat water, baby bottles made of plastic continue to leak micro plastics (microscopic-sized pieces of plastic) for an average of 21 days afterwards! This is troublesome in that overtime, the accumulation of micro plastics in the body can cause health concerns such as reproductive harm, inflammation of the gut lining, and other organs.
What Can I Do?
So what can a parent do?
Well, for starters, as parents, we can chose to take the more natural route for our babies, like breastfeeding, and when bottle feeding, we can use nontoxic baby bottles made out of materials like stainless steel and glass.
Nontoxic Baby Bottle Materials
Basically when looking into buying a nontoxic baby bottle, you have one of two options for the materials – glass and stainless steel.
Many products labeled as “safe” or “nontoxic” simply are not because they tend to be made out of silicone, which breaks down when exposed to high heat (like in the dishwasher).
Therefore, I chose to go with glass and stainless steel bottles, which are much safer.
My go to for a glass bottle was originally Doctor Brown’s because of the anti-colic vent that they have.
However, the ventilation system and the nipples to the bottle are made of plastic, so be sure to hand wash this to minimize the risk of contamination.
Natursutten is my new favorite when it comes to glass baby bottles because not only are they super aesthetically pleasing, but these bottles contain no plastic.
The nipples are made of rubber, but it is naturally-derived from the rubber plant.
The only slightly aggravating thing with natural rubber is that you do have to hand-wash it at a low temperature or else it will break-down quickly and get a “sticky” feeling to it.
This is a great company that also has natural rubber teether available for sale as well!
