From fluoride, to chlorine, to PFA/PFOAs, to pharmaceuticals, to lead, to mercury, our modern water supplies are heavy laden with toxins. For a healthier home, buy a water filter today. Here is a quick list of the best water filters for removing toxins.
Why Use a Water Filter?
If you have city-water, then you know first-hand that your water supply might not be as clean as you would like.
Just take a shower or a bath and take a deep breathe in.
What do you smell?
Most likely, you smell a public swimming pool – AKA high amounts of chlorine.
Although chlorine is readily found in tap water across America at high levels, it is not the only toxin to be worried about when it comes to your family’s water supply.
That is why using a top-notch water filter, in my opinion, is a must!
A Word on Price
- The very best water filters are EXPENSIVE.
- This expense is worth the added health benefits of having toxin-free water.
- The other good news regarding cost is that usually this expense is a one time fee plus some lower maintenance costs. (Filtering device plus yearly or bi-yearly filters)
- These costs do eventually break even — for example, some filters track how much money you are saving by using this filter versus buying bottled water.
- A lot of companies will give you subscription discounts for your water filter replacements thus saving you money.
Varying Levels of Water Filters
Whereas the very best filters would be reverse osmosis filters, the everyday layman often has a carbon-based filter laying around their home.
Think Britta filters….
The Issue with “Britta”-Type Filters
The issue with carbon-based water filters is that they don’t get everything!
Especially dangerous to the human body is a group of chemicals known as “forever chemicals”, or PFAs.
These chemicals do not break down and are impossible to get out of the human body once they have entered.
That means, unlike say fat or water-soluble toxins, there is no effective way to detox the body from these chemicals.
That is why I would not advocate for solely carbon-based filters.
However, since they are cheaper in price, I will link below my favorite and most effective filter from this category.
Why I Say No to Berkey Filters As Well
This is also why I do not advocate for the Berkey filter.
Not only are Berkey’s difficult to maintain, (filters are expensive and confusing to set up), but they have not been tested or guaranteed by the NSF standard to filter out chemicals such as PFAs.
That being said, Berkey’s do filter out most heavy metals and some other chemicals.
But to me, the best type of filters out on the market will have been third-party certified to remove PFAs.
Carbon-Based Water Filter
This is my favorite carbon-based water filter because not only does it remove nearly 100% of TDS (total dissolved solids), it comes with a testing device so that you can monitor the lifespan of your filter.
This testing device makes it easy to know when to replace your filter.
Simply stick the testing device into a glass of filtered water, if the TDS reads above 006, then it is time to change your filter.
It is also fairly inexpensive and comes in a few shapes and sizes, including an easy-to-pour 10 cup water pitcher version.
What makes this filter so effective for such a small device is that it has five-stages, all focusing on removing various elements and chemicals from your water!
For a cheap and quick investment, this pitcher makes a world of difference!
Reverse Osmosis Water Filters
As I mentioned above, the very best water filters out on the market today use a process called reverse osmosis.
This is the only process known to remove truly every kind of toxin this modern world can throw at us – pharmaceuticals, hormone disruptors, PFA/PFOAs, heavy metals, bacteria and viruses, etc.
The one catch to these systems is the heavy initial investment.
I love this water filter because not only does it filter out basically anything that could be harmful to your and your family, but it can fit perfectly on your countertop.
It also has a sleek and modern design. So it definitely is not an eye sore!
It filters a gallon of water at a time. And comes with mineral drops to add healthy minerals back into your water.
Also, the filters are built to last a year and are only $70 for the set!
This filter, unlike the one above, goes underneath your sink and connects to the plumbing of your sink. This set up is fairly easy and does not require a plumber — says Aquasana’s website.
It also comes with a two-stage filter, and a third “step” of remineralization, thus adding healthy levels of minerals back into your water.
The filters are a little more expensive than the Aqua Tru’s filters, but the initial investment is actually much lower, so at the end of the day there is no real difference in price between these two filters.
Another great perk to Aquasana’s filters is that they come with a life-time discount if you subscribe to their filter replacements.
Aquasana also offers a shower filter, which can be super helpful to making bath time much safer for you and yours! And if you’re into having a detachable massage-handle for your shower head, they make an option for that as well.
Overall Thoughts on Water Filters
If you are not ready to make an investment of a couple hundred dollars on a water filter, then a great place to start is with the Zero Water Filter Pitcher.
However, if you are willing to part with a few hundred “buckaroos”, then the investment will be definitely worth the safety and peace of mind it brings you!
